AMD EPYC 8004 "Zen4 Sienna" series for SP6 socket now validated by SATA and PCI organization - VideoCardz.com

The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) confirms SATA support for AMD EPYC 8004 series.

The SP6 socket will host up to 64 Zen4 cores, and it is designed for performance per watt optimized workloads. Unlike Genoa and Bergamo, which use bigger SP5 socket and require more power for the most high-end variants (up to 400W) of EPYC 9004, the SP5 socket will be optimized for as low as 70W (up to 225W). Although AMD did not directly confirm the SP6 socket yet, it has already been pictured and documented to host the EPYC series codenamed “Sienna”. AMD confirmed the series to be designed for telecommunication and intelligent edge devices, and it should come out this year.

Both the SATA and PCI organizations have now validated the EPYC 8004 series. Those are the first CPU series designed for the new SP6 socket.

The design of the SP6 socket is similar to SP3, at least when size is considered. Both sockets are 58.5×75.4 mm in size but the newer socket for Zen4/DDR5 platform has more contact pads (4844 vs. 4096).

The AMD Siena series might and probably won’t be the only product for this type of socket. It is expected that Ryzen Threadripper 7000 HEDT “Storm Peak” could also launch in two variants, one potentially being based on variant of the SP6 socket. This socket reportedly supports fewer memory channels, four compared to eight on the SP5.
