If you want to know what disappointment feels like, simply open your kitchen cupboard and search for a nonstick pan that is more than a year old. In my experience, no matter how promisingly they start off, every nonstick pan loses its slickness until you find yourself scrubbing off encrusted pieces of food. And yet we keep buying them.
